Packers Are Right to Try to Keep Josh Jones in Green Bay
By Jerry Trotta
The last we heard of Packers safety Josh Jones came in late May when he was missing from the team's voluntary workouts in hopes of forcing Green Bay's hand into trading him.
Fast forward to Tuesday, however, and Jones was actually present for the start of the franchise's mandatory minicamp, though he was reportedly held out due to a hamstring injury.
Though Jones is unaware of his future with Green Bay and general manager Brian Gutekunst wouldn't elaborate on any potential trade involving the safety, we now know that head coach Matt LeFleur wants to keep the North Carolina State product around for next season.
And we completely concur with LaFleur's stance.
"I think we're on the same page in terms of what the expectations are and where he fits with us," said the first-year head coach. "We certainly want him a part of what we're doing moving forward... He can fill a lot of roles, especially in Mike Pettine's defense where we're going to play multiple defensive backs and put these guys all over the place."
It appears that the Packers are in no hurry to part ways with the 24-year-old, even after using a first-round pick on Darnell Savage and signing Adrian Amos in free agency.
It remains unclear what kind or how big a role Jones would play if he stays a Cheesehead, but Green Bay electing to not trade him would only add to their newfound secondary depth -- a perk they haven't had at their disposal for quite some time.
