Packers Need to Go All Out for Rams WR Brandin Cooks Trade After His Latest Cryptic Tweet
By Brady Williams
The Los Angeles Rams have undergone a pretty sizable rebuild effort this year. After giving Jared Goff a huge contract last year, they're freeing up cap space across the roster. Todd Gurley was one of the biggest casualties, and it looks like Brandin Cooks will be next. The Rams are reportedly looking to trade the high-priced wideout, and it's a huge opportunity for the Green Bay Packers, who desperately need some more weapons alongside Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams.
It's not set in stone that Cooks will be leaving, but one of his latest tweets suggests that he wants out. That's why the Packers need to put in some serious leg work and do what they can to get him. Rodgers needs another target to complement Adams, and despite a down year in 2019, Cooks' track record shows he has the potential to be a great No. 2 in Green Bay.
He only had 583 receiving yards in 2019 due to injuries and the emergence of Robert Woods, but he had five consecutive seasons with a thousand yards or more prior to that. It seems like he's been around forever, but the Oregon State product is only 26 years old. It's not like the Packers would be getting someone over the hill with a prohibitive contract.
Cooks has shown he can be a phenomenal player, and if he were to receive a quarterback upgrade, he could be a deadly threat again. Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks of the modern era and we've seen what he's capable of doing with minimal weapons. Adding Cooks to Matt LaFleur's offense would instantly make the Pack a Super Bowl favorite.
Now that Cooks has seemingly made it clear that he wants out, the Packers should be pouncing at the chance to get him. They won't have to sacrifice too much on the trade given his large contract and significant cap hits over the next two seasons. General manager Brian Gutekunst would have to find a way to clear some cap space, which won't be easy, but we've seen plenty of teams do it this season by converting base salaries into signing bonuses.
With Green Bay's $12.6 million in space at the moment, just a few adjustments would have to be made.
