Jordan Love's Old Coach Reveals Packers Started Calling to Ask About Him Months Ago
By Michael Luciano
The Green Bay Packers clearly made the most shocking pick of the 2020 NFL Draft's first round when they drafted Utah State quarterback Jordan Love 26th overall despite the presence of Aaron Rodgers.
The Packers were actually all in on Love for months, however, as former Utah State head coach Matt Wells, currently at Texas Tech, confirmed that general manager Brian Gutekunst was calling him as far back as the middle of the 2019 season to pick Wells' brain for info about Love.
19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions don't sound like numbers you'd attach to a first-round quarterback, but Love showed a taste of what his ceiling could be during his sophomore season under Wells. In Wells' up-tempo, Air Raid-adjacent offense, Love threw for 32 touchdowns against six interceptions in 2018 while helping the Aggies win the New Mexico Bowl.
Wells clearly knows how to get the most out of Love. Hopefully Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett knows how to help the raw passer get better with each passing season.
Love won't see the field for a while, so coaching him up on the practice field will be key for his development. The Packers, however, clearly believe that they have the pieces necessary to help Love go from raw to high-level starter.
