Packers Were Dumb to Pass on Demarcus Robinson in Favor of Devin Funchess
By Michael Luciano
The Green Bay Packers agreed to terms with wide receiver Devin Funchess, a huge outside target who spent almost his entire 2019 season with the Indianapolis Colts on injured reserve.
Green Bay fans certainly should be happy they added another wide receiver, but some fans may not like the fact that they passed on former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Demarcus Robinson to sign Funchess.
Robinson, a former fourth-round pick out of Florida, set new career highs this season with 32 receptions, 449 receiving yards, and four touchdowns, most of which came during Tyreek Hill's spell on the injury report.
Robinson is a 6-1, 205-pound receiver who possesses excellent deep speed, good ball skills, and solid route-running ability. Funchess, a former Carolina Panthers stud, might be a 6-4, 235-pound possession receiver with more experience, but Robinson's 2019 tape proves that he would be the receiver with a higher upside. He should have been Green Bay's No. 2 receiver next year, not Funchess.
Funchess' size and speed are certainly intriguing, but Robinson proved that he can be a solid tertiary or quaternary receiving option on a team that ends up as a champion. The fact that Brian Gutekunst looked at both of them and decided on Funchess is a bad look for the front office.
