This Packers-Eagles Trade for Alshon Jeffery Would Ruin Bears Fans' Lives
By Mark Powell
Alshon Jeffery is very available, and the Packers are in need of a wideout. That doesn't mean Green Bay dealing for the veteran wideout wouldn't take some getting used to.
Jeffery is a top target as a potential centerpiece in an NFL Draft day trade, especially since he'd likely net a mid-round pick if the Eagles are willing to take on some of his $15 million cap hit. The WR-needy Packers ought to make the call.
The former Bear is very familiar with the NFL's greatest rivalry. Should this deal go down, he'd just be on the other side of it, catching passes from Aaron Rodgers and scoring against his former team.
Jeffery is a former Bears draft pick, and made his only Pro Bowl with Chicago in 2013. That's the kind of potential Green Bay would hope to harness, with the veteran lining up next to Davante Adams.
To make such a dream a reality, however, the Packers need to fix their cap situation. That could involve a contract restructure with Preston Smith, who has a $13.5 million cap hit in 2020. Such a decision would free up enough money for the Pack to deal DE Dean Lowry and a fourth-round pick for Jeffery, and avoid being relegated to cap hell in the process.
Lowry adds another DE to Philly's stacked defensive front, and the fourth-rounder (No. 136 overall) is being generous given they don't even want Jeffery on the roster at this juncture.
Making Bears fans cry is just an added bonus.
