This Packers-Falcons Trade for Jamaal Williams Would Give Atlanta Awesome RB Depth
By Michael Luciano
The Green Bay Packers appear to be just about done with running back Jamaal Williams, who will become a free agent after the 2020 season, after the team used a second-round pick in the NFL Draft on Boston College running back AJ Dillon.
If the Packers want to get something in return for Williams, they should consider trading him to the Atlanta Falcons so he could back up Todd Gurley.
The Falcons, who have proved willing to part with draft picks under GM Thomas Dimitroff, could give up just a sixth-round pick for Williams.
Gurley is the unquestioned starter, and should be in line for another productive season. 2018 fourth-round pick Ito Smith is the change of pace/pass-catching back in Dirk Koetter's offense, while 2019 fifth-round pick Qadree Ollison showed promise as a short-yardage back. Former Wyoming star Brian Hill is also in the mix.
Williams could help the Falcons get rid of one or two of those backs given his ability to lower his shoulder and absorb contact between the tackles while remaining an effective route-runner and pass catcher out of the backfield. Adding Williams could also help Atlanta avoid running Gurley into the ground.
Gurley will try to revitalize a stagnant Falcons running game, but he might not be able to do it by himself. Williams, however, could be a major shot in the arm for this offense.
