This Packers-Giants Trade for Evan Engram Would Finally Give Aaron Rodgers the Tight End He Needs
By Michael Luciano
The Green Bay Packers are expected to use one of their mid-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft on a tight end to replace Jimmy Graham and pair with Jace Sternberger, but general manager Brian Gutekunst might be able to pilfer a high-quality starter via trade.
The 49ers have reportedly kicked the tires on potentially trading for New York Giants tight end Evan Engram, which should prompt Green Bay to get on the horn with Dave Gettleman and try to beat San Francisco to the punch.
The former Ole Miss star's injury history, which has forced him to miss 14 games in his NFL career to this point, will likely depreciate his value, and Green Bay might be able to snag him for a third-round pick and a fifth-round pick. If the Packers think that's too high, then they can counter with a fourth and sixth or fourth and fifth, which the Giants should take too.
The Giants have plenty of holes on their roster, so trading Engram for more draft picks should give them enough assets to address a lot of them. Green Bay, meanwhile, gets Rodgers a dynamic, versatile pass catcher who can really scoot in the open field and make people miss, assuming he can stay healthy.
Rodgers is in need of a speedy tight end that can work the seam in the middle of the field. Trading for Engram, who is just entering his prime, could be a good way to accomplish that instead of taking a risk on another draft pick or aging veteran signing.
