Packers Bringing Back Jake Kumerow But They Need to Continue Upgrading WR Corps
By Jerry Trotta
The Green Bay Packers didn't exactly headline Monday's official opening of the NFL's legal tampering period, but the team still made a nice move by inking a deal with free agent linebacker Christian Kirksey.
On Tuesday, that narrative continued as ESPN reporter Rob Demovsky revealed that the Packers gave wideout Jake Kumerow a minimum salary tender. As an exclusive rights free agent, the 28-year-is now unable to join a new team.
This is a respectable move by Green Bay as Kumerow established an evident rapport with Aaron Rodgers in his limited playing time in 2019. However, Packers supporters will undoubtedly be pushing general manager Brian Gutekunst to make more tweaks to the team's mediocre wide receiving corps.
Kumerow is a nice player, but he shouldn't be anything more than a No. 4 (maybe No. 3) receiver on a squad with Super Bowl aspirations.
Davante Adams is a bonafide stud, but Green Bay was left decimated at WR when he went down with turf toe, which shelved him for four games. Despite missing a month, Adams led the team in receiving by a country mile.
With Geronimo Allison likely leaving in free agency, the Packers currently have Adams, Kumerow, Allen Lazard, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling at their disposal.
That just isn't going to cut it.
