Packers Made a Big Mistake With Geronimo Allison Last Year and Shouldn't Have Let Him Go
By Michael Luciano
A Green Bay Packers team that is already short on wide receivers just lost one of their best contributors over the last few years.
Former undrafted free agent wide receiver Geronimo Allison agreed to a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions. This could come back to bite Matt LaFleur and Green Bay, as Allison's production decline last year was the result of some improper usage.
Under LaFleur and Nathaniel Hackett, the Packers tried to convert Allison into a slot receiver despite the fact that his best seasons as a Packer came when he was playing on the outside. His best traits are his deep speed, not his short area quickness.
Danny Amendola and Marvin Jones can handle the slot duties for the Lions, while Allison and Kenny Golladay can line up outside.
Allison was by no means James Lofton during his time in Green Bay, but he was a solid deep threat receiver with the ability to the make some highlight-reel catches. Green Bay lost him due to trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, while Detroit promises to use him in a more correct fashion.
