Packers Absolutely Need to Call the Browns if Rumors of Vikings-Odell Beckham Jr. Trade Are True

On Wednesday morning, rumors swirled about Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. potentially being traded to the Minnesota Vikings. Even though the rumor was kiboshed hours later, we can never forget the words that New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman said a year earlier:

"We didn't sign Odell to trade him."

Of course, Gettleman traded him nearly a month after saying that. If Beckham is being linked to trades now, it's only a matter of time before he's calling a new city home. Since the Vikings were rumored to nab Beckham, the Green Bay Packers should be aggressive in stealing him from their NFC North rival if the chatter is true -- especially if the price being discussed is true as well. The Packers should without a doubt give up a second- and fifth-round pick for OBJ.

The main flaw that prevented the Packers from clinching a spot in Super Bowl LIV was their lack of quality depth at the receiver position. Davante Adams was the main difference maker in Green Bay's air attack, while Geronimo Allison, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown, and Allen Lazard didn't provide much support at all. The Packers did add Devin Funchess this offseason, but he's not exactly a feared talent.

Green Bay obviously wants to win another Super Bowl before quarterback Aaron Rodgers retires. At this stage, the Packers can't keep throwing young receivers into the starting lineup and pray that they work out. Instead, they should be targeting a stud veteran like Beckham to create a dominant duo with Adams.

The path to Super Bowl LV is even tougher for the Packers with the New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers standing out as their biggest threats.

Adding Beckham to the offense makes things easier for Rodgers and the Packers in 2020.
