3 Packers Players Who Won't Survive in Green Bay Beyond This Season
By Michael Luciano
The Green Bay Packers are in a very puzzling place as it pertains to their franchise’s direction over the next few seasons. With the selection of Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the organization has shown that they are willing to turn over the roster as they prepare for the end of the Aaron Rodgers era.
Ahead of an offseason that's sure to be the final campaign in Green Bay for a handful of players, these three contributors from 2019 better have only leased property in Wisconsin because they could be out the door.
3. TE Marcedes Lewis
Lewis continues to be a solid blocking tight end, even as the 36-year-old prepares for his 15th NFL season. Unfortunately, the Packers have tight end covered without him, as a pair of third-rounders in 2019 selection Jace Sternberger and 2020 prospect Josiah Deguara have more than enough blocking and receiving potential combined to relegate Lewis to backup duty once again. 2020 might not only be his final season as a Packer, it might also be Lewis’ last dance in the pros.
2. CB Josh Jackson
The Packers double-dipped at cornerback in the 2018 draft, adding Louisville’s Jaire Alexander in the first round and Iowa’s Josh Jackson in the second. Alexander has become one of the best young corners in football, while Jackson had just 11 tackles last year. Jackson’s talents are best in a zone-heavy scheme, and Mike Pettine’s man-to-man defense has not been kind to the young corner. If he doesn’t pick his game up this season, he’s as good as gone.
1. RB Jamaal Williams
Aaron Jones might be the bell cow, but Williams has been one of the steadiest backups in all of football during his career, compiling 674 yards from scrimmage or more in each of his three seasons as a pro. Green Bay has prepared for one or both of them leaving in free agency, as evidenced by the selection of Boston College’s AJ Dillon in the second round of the 2020 Draft. If they have to pay either Williams or Jones, the guy who led the league in touchdowns is probably a safer bet to be retained than a backup like Williams.
