Packers Not Pursuing Tight Ends and Relying on Jace Sternberger is an Insult to Aaron Rodgers
Are the Green Bay Packers not paying attention to what the New Orleans Saints have been up to this month? Not only did the Saints sign Malcolm Jenkins to strengthen the secondary, but they also added impact receiver Emmanuel Sanders on Friday night.
Meanwhile, the Packers haven't made much of a splash in free agency, and are yet to address their needs at tight end after releasing Jimmy Graham. So, why are all signs pointing to Jace Sternberger being TE No. 1 for Aaron Rodgers and the offense? Is this what fans can expect this fall?
It's not clear what Brian Gutekunst is thinking here. While Sternberger is a former third-round pick and has potential, he had exactly zero receptions during the regular season in 2019. In the postseason, he had three receptions for 15 yards and one touchdown. A second-year player coming off three total catches during his rookie campaign cannot be expected to serve as the featured tight end for an icon like Rodgers.
After the Graham experiment proved to be a failure, the team needed to send a message to AR12 and the fan base by going after a capable, sure-handed tight end option. Sternberger may prove to be that down the line, but what kind of a leap can we expect for him in 2020? Rodgers isn't getting any younger out here.
While the top free agent tight ends have found new teams, the Packers have sat on their hands. It's infuriating to see, and Rodgers should be annoyed as anyone about it.
