Packers' Shawn Mennenga Provides Glimpse Into the Secret World of NFL Special Teams Coordinators
By Scott Rogust
When watching NFL action weekly during the regular season, you see that after the game clock strikes zero, that many players and coaches shake hands and have some friendly exchanges.
As it turns out, there's a lot that goes on off-the-field when it comes to the relationship between a group you may not always think about: special teams coordinators. In fact, you can say they have their own secret world. Shawn Mennenga of the Green Bay Packers revealed to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic that all 32 special teams coordinators go out for dinner during the NFL Scouting Combine. Mennenga further explained that the coordinator whose team won the Super Bowl that year pays for everyone's tab.
That's got to be one gigantic bill. Of course, if you hoisted the Lombardi Trophy earlier that year, money is less of an issue that it is for most. You've got job security for days!
Based off Mennenga's words, that means Joe Judge of the New England Patriots was the latest member of the special teams coordinators club to pay the restaurant bill.
Nice work if you can get it.
It just goes to show that the NFL brotherhood remains strong even among special teams coaches. So, what do the equipment managers do every year?
Actually, we don't want to know.
