Packers TE Jace Sternberger and DB Ibraheim Campbell Taking Steps Toward Potential Injury Return
By Jerry Trotta
Don't look now, Green Bay Packers fans, but Aaron Rodgers could be on the verge of welcoming another much-needed weapon into the passing game.
The team has designated rookie tight end Jace Sternberger for a return from IR, which allows him to return to practice and subsequently opens up a three-week window for him to be potentially activated to the 53-man roster.
The same can be said for safety Ibraheim Campbell, who was placed on the physically unable to perform list ahead of the 2019 campaign as he worked his way back from the ACL surgery that he underwent roughly 10 months ago.
Sternberger, the No. 75 overall pick back in April's draft, appears to be recovered from an ankle injury that he suffered in the preseason, and that news couldn't come at a better time for the Packers.
Starting tight end Jimmy Graham hasn't even come close to living up to the billing that he once personified with the Saints and his first year with the Seahawks; expect Sternberger to compete for first-team reps once he completes his required three-week practice time.
Campbell, on the other hand, was claimed off waivers in November of 2018. He subsequently tore his ACL during the first week of December after impressing in three games for Green Bay. During that limited time, he recorded 18 tackles and his potential return will provide the Pack's already elite secondary with more depth to boot.
The duo are certainly one step closer, but it remains to be seen if they will be activated to the 53-man roster. Therefore, stay tuned for updates on their progress (or lack thereof) in practice.
