Packers to Have Season-Long Captains Instead of Rotating Each Week
By Chris Russo
Matt LaFleur is implementing his own system in Green Bay, and that includes putting more trust in some of his players than Mike McCarthy would, at least on a ceremonial level.
The first-year Green Bay Packers head coach says he will alter his predecessor's tradition of weekly-rotating captains. Instead, the Packers will maintain their rotational captaincy, but have named three permanent captains as well.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be the full-time offensive captain, veteran kicker Mason Crosby will become the special teams captain, and first-year Packer linebacker Za'Darius Smith will represent the defense.
LaFleur is looking to establish his own culture in Green Bay, and by naming the three stars as permanent captains, he's helped identify the guys who he feels best represent each side of the football.
It's also important that he isn't completely doing away with the rotating captains, as it will allow other key players on the team the chance to represent the squad, while maintaining certain aspects of tradition.
The three permanent captains were all donning the "C" patch in Week 2, and they will now be wearing it on a regular basis going forward.
