Panthers Place Star QB Cam Newton on IR Due to Lingering Foot Injury
By Karl Rasmussen
Cam Newton has been out of commission since Week 2, as he's been dealing with a lisfranc injury in his foot. With Newton sidelined, Kyle Allen has filled in admirably, and now it looks as if he'll be under center for the remainder of the season.
With Newton's foot not getting any better, the Panthers placed him on IR, officially putting an end to his 2019 campaign.
Through two games in 2019, Newton failed to throw a touchdown pass and tossed an interception. He was also not running the football, making just five carries for a total of -2 yards.
Even with Newton on the sideline, the Panthers have managed to find success in 2019, thanks to the play of Allen and star running back Christian McCaffrey.
Through six starts, Allen has posted a 5-1 record, helping the team to their current 5-3 record. He's thrown nine touchdown passes to just four interceptions, completing 60.7% of his pass attempts for 1,291 yards.
The Panthers are very much still in contention for a playoff spot, and while the decision to shut down Newton is disappointing, Allen has done more than enough to prove he can lead this team going forward.
