3 RBs Panthers Should Draft to Ensure They Don't Overuse Christian McCaffrey After Record Contract
By Michael Luciano
The Carolina Panthers might have signed All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey to a $64 million contract extension, but they have to realize that riding him for as many touches as they gave him over the last two years is simply irresponsible. The Panthers need to use either a Day 2 or Day 3 pick on a backup running back who can take up around 8-10 touches a game and keep McCaffrey fresh. These three potential steals would be perfect for Joe Brady's offense.
3. Darrynton Evans, Appalachian State
Evans was considered a "diamond in the rough" by most in the draft community, but his standout performance against Javon Kinlaw, TJ Brunson and South Carolina proved that this is a guy who will be a contributor on offense on Day 1. With surprising elusiveness and nice receiving potential, Evans could spell McCaffrey as a runner and as a pass-catcher in 2020 if Carolina keeps him in the Tar Heel State.
2. Zack Moss, Utah
Moss isn't a very fast running back, but he is one of the best in this class at rushing between the tackles. A solid athlete who can change direction well and lower his shoulder for extra yards, Moss earned comparisons to former Chiefs star Kareem Hunt due to his running style. Now that his medical reports have come up clean, Moss should be a prime target for Carolina on Day 2 of the draft.
1. Cam Akers, Florida State
A horrible offensive line at Florida State prevented Akers from showing off what a tremendously dynamic runner he can be. Do not let this 220 pound back get a full head of steam, as he has the athleticism, speed and power, to run around, past, or through you. McCaffrey could continue jitterbugging his way to 1,000 yard seasons if he has someone like Akers ready to take some carries between the tackles and bludgeon opposing linebackers.
