3 Ways Patrick Mahomes Could Get Even Better in 2020
By Scott Rogust
It took only two full seasons for Patrick Mahomes to solidify his role a the NFL's best quarterback. The scary thing is, it usually takes signal callers a few years to fully progress. That's right, Mahomes is only going to get better, much to the dismay of opposing defenses.
So, how can the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback improve his game in 2020?
3. Championship Mentality
It took Mahomes just two seasons to achieve something that takes most players 15-plus years to achieve: win his first Super Bowl. Now at just 24 years old, Mahomes knows exactly what it takes to make it to and eventually win the big game. Tom Brady got his taste of glory in 2001 in his very first season as a starting quarterback, and immediately turned the Patriots into a dynasty for the next 18 years. Mahomes could follow down that very same path, starting in 2020.
2. Improve in Play Action Situations
You'd think a player like Mahomes would thrive in play-action situations, but that hasn't been the case. When looking at NFL's Next-Gen Stats, Mahomes' off-target rate was higher on play-action passes (23%) than non-play action passes (17.5%) in 2019. To make matters even more confusing, Mahomes is actually better in play-action when he's pressured, as opposed to having all the time in the world to make a decision. That goes to show that Mahomes actually thrives when game situations get tough, which makes for a great quarterback. Still, he needs to make the most of gift-wrapped opportunities in play-action.
1. Gain Full Knowledge of Defensive Schemes
This offseason, Mahomes sent the football world into full tilt. During an appearance on HBO's "The Shop," Mahomes revealed that he learned to read opposing defenses halfway through last season, and says there's still plenty of room to improve in that department. Just think about it. Mahomes won the NFL MVP award in 2018 without having a full grasp of defensive schemes. Defensive coordinators must've collectively flipped their desks after hearing Mahomes say that. Long story short, Mahomes is going to be a nightmare for years to come once he learns how to fully pick apart defenses.
