Patriots Reportedly Re-Sign Devin McCourty to Mostly-Guaranteed 2-Year Deal
By Scott Rogust
The New England Patriots were originally expected to face a mass exodus of talent, especially in the defensive backfield. Yet, the Pats secured their secondary for the foreseeable future.
On Sunday, the Patriots agreed to terms with safety Devin McCourty to a two-year, $23 million contract, with $17 million guaranteed.
This moves comes days after the team opted to pick up the option on twin brother Jason's contract. That, in turn, pays Jason over $5 million for the 2020 season.
Devin McCourty was bound to have plenty of suitors on the open market. Perhaps the team with the most buzz was the New York Giants, as their current head coach is former Patriots special teams coordinator Joe Judge, who worked extensively with McCourty.
McCourty played a key role in the Patriots dominant defensive backfield. In 16 games this past season, Devin recorded 58 tackles, seven passes defensed, and five interceptions.
The Patriots knew the daunting task they faced in trying to retain their best players from hitting the open market. So far, they've done a great job in doing so by successfully retaining the McCourty twins.
