This Patriots-Lions Trade for Julian Edelman Could Actually Work
By Jerry Trotta
They are fringe rumors, but the latest NFL buzz indicates that the New England Patriots could look to shop wide receiver Julian Edelman this offseason. The current state of the team is truly unknown in terms of whether Bill Belichick intends on competing in 2020.
Tom Brady bolting in free agency has left the team at a crossroads at the quarterback position for the first time since the early 1990s, so trading Edelman isn't as outlandish as some fans in Foxborough might think.
The Detroit Lions have emerged as one of the potential suitors for Edelman -- at least based on a rumor from The Ringer's Bill Simmons -- and it's possible the 33-year-old vet could link up with former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.
Given Edelman's age and injury history, the Patriots don't exactly boast a ton of leverage. With that being said, New England might be able to land a mid-round selection for the three-time Super Bowl champion, who logged 100 receptions for 1,117 yards and six touchdowns last season.
The Lions will likely have to cough up one of their two third-round picks in this year's draft. The Pats could start the bidding for the No. 67 overall pick. If Detroit agrees, then you have a deal. If not, there's nothing wrong with New England settling for the No. 85 overall selection plus maybe a sixth- or seventh-rounder.
Maybe we even see a package deal with Edelman and Thuney for something more...
Belichick would stockpile more of his beloved draft capital, and the Lions would add a productive slot receiver to pair alongside star wideouts Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones. It's a win-win for both sides, and Patricia could get his hand on another Patriot.
