When you look in the NFL's history books, you'll see that the New England Patriots lost Super Bowl LII to the Philadelphia Eagles. But many football fans wonder what would've happened if head coach Bill Belichick had not mysteriously benched cornerback Malcolm Butler. The decision confused fans then, and they'll be even more bewildered based off the recent comments from a former Patriots player.

During an appearance on WEEI radio in Boston on Thursday, ex-Patriots running back Shane Vereen said he asked numerous players on that 2017 team about Butler's benching, and he received different answers each time.

“No, I have actually asked quite a few guys who were on the team at the time and I have not got the same answer twice,” said Vereen, via WEEI. “The grassy knoll still exists.”

Should we be shocked by this? Belichick has made a career out of giving the media absolutely nothing during press conferences. The fact that he managed to pull it off on his own players is...actually pretty impressive.

After the game, Belichick said that he benched Butler for "football reasons." Once he signed a massive contract with the Tennessee Titans, Butler told the Boston Herald that he never got an exact reason for the benching, but he did surmise that the coaching staff thought he was behind on the game plan due to being sick on Opening Night of Super Bowl week.

At this rate, we'll never know the true reason. Only Belichick knows, and let's face it, he'll never tell us.
