3 Free Agents the Patriots Should Sign to Complete the Offseason
No one knows how the New England Patriots will perform without Tom Brady. All Bill Belichick can do is build the best team possible and hope his system is good enough to get his team back into the postseason. Nonetheless, the roster can change between now and the start of the season, especially if they add a few veteran players to the roster via free agency. Three individuals stand out as players Belichick should sign to add depth and competition on the roster.
3. Taylor Gabriel
Taylor Gabriel is a 5-7 receiver who seems to fit perfectly with the style of offense run in New England. His best year came in 2018 with the Chicago Bears when he had 688 yards on 67 receptions. Injuries limited him to nine games in 2019. He would join a crowded receiver room and would be fighting for playing time alongside players like Jakobi Myers, Damiere Byrd, and Marqise Lee. The Patriots don't desperately need a receiver, but Gabriel seems like a perfect fit in the Josh McDaniels offense.
2. Jabaal Sheard
Jabaal Sheard is a free agent after spending three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Before that, he was in New England for two seasons and had a total of 13 sacks. He won a Super Bowl with the team and has been durable throughout his career, playing in 134 games over nine seasons. Sheard can play both linebacker and defensive end and is already familiar with the system. Getting him back in New England could lead to a similar resurgence as to what was seen with Jamie Collins in 2019.
1. Delanie Walker
Delanie Walker is a three-time Pro Bowler who spent seven seasons with the Tennessee Titans before being let go this offseason. He has dealt with injuries and only played in a total of eight games over the past two seasons. Yet, the Patriots need a lot of help at tight end and Walker stands out as a great option on a one or two-year deal. He was a 1,000-yard receiver in 2015 and averaged around 800 yards per season with the Titans when healthy. Walker is no Gronk, but he is a reliable option for whoever lines up at quarterback in 2020.
