Patriots Reportedly Inquired About Trading for Bucs Tight End OJ Howard
By Karl Rasmussen
The New England Patriots look like the most complete team in the NFL, but even Bill Belichick's side has its weaknesses.
Most glaringly, the Patriots lack a true impact tight end, having utilized the likes of Ben Watson, Matt LaCosse and Ryan Izzo at the position, signing former Jet Eric Tomlinson for depth purposes (to no avail).
In an effort to upgrade, it won't shock you the Patriots have reportedly been seeking a tight end on the trade market, and one guy who's piqued their interest is Bucs' tight end OJ Howard, who has struggled to get acclimated in the offense in 2019 (or 2018...).
Howard would be a great fit in New England, but it's unlikely that Tampa would let him go, at least not cheap. The Bucs selected him with the 19th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama. His draft pedigree and the flashes of elite potential he's shown in the past would certainly command a decent haul in a trade.
While things haven't gone to plan for Howard in 2019, having logged just 13 receptions for 176 yards and no scores, the Bucs have already told the Patriots they aren't interested in trading the 24-year-old.
So, with Howard likely not heading to New England, the Patriots will continue to search for viable options at the position, lest run with the group already on the roster.
Their interest in Howard speaks volumes, as does Tampa Bay's immediate dismissal of the proposal.
