Patriots Should Solve QB Issues and Trade up for Tua Tagovailoa
By Michael Luciano
After Tom Brady's departure to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency, the New England Patriots are left with a quarterback room that consists of Brian Hoyer, Jarrett Stidham and Cody Kessler. Anyone who even pretends to know anything about evaluating quarterbacks can see that is not an ideal depth chart.
The 2020 draft is very top heavy when it comes to quarterbacks, but it features a few stars that could change the direction of the franchise. Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa is one of those mercurial talents, and the fact that he is back throwing shows that he his ahead of schedule in recovering from his serious hip injury.
You know what to do, Bill Belichick.
The Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers both need a quarterback, and they currently occupy the No. 5 and No. 6 picks in this draft, respectively. It will cost a lot of resources to move up, but it could prevent New England from going to Stidham or Hoyer next season.
Former Patriots OC Charlie Weis claims that he "wouldn't put it past" Belichick to move up for a player of Tua's ilk, and that move is looking more likely now that Brady is in Tampa.
The Patriots have been more likely to trade back and accumulate picks instead of trading up for one star player over the last decade or so, but quarterback uncertainty has forced New England to sail into unfamiliar, choppy waters. Trading up for Tua would give New England a chance at solving their next 10 years of instability at that position.
