VIDEO: Pete Alonso and Mets Manager Luis Rojas Surprise 82-Year-Old Fan via FaceTime After Her Cancer Diagnosis
By Jack Murphy
While he is not competing on the baseball diamond, New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso is still finding ways to stay a part of the lives of some of his most diehard fans. After an 82-year-old Mets fan, and the grandmother of Ally Henglein, was diagnosed with cancer, Pete Alonso, along with newly-named manager Luis Rojas, gave her the surprise of her lifetime.
"It's affecting all of us, and life's not the same without Mets baseball," Alonso told the 82-year-old, through her tears. Heartwarming, to say the least. Above and beyond for Alonso during these trying times.
Henglein reached out to the Mets organization via Twitter and explained her grandmother Kathleen's situation -- after this swift diagnosis, it seems she only has a few weeks left to live. The very next day, Alonso had already reacted to the message on Twitter, going above and beyond, while his new manager led the charge, too. Truly, a caring organization.
Not only did she get a video message from one of the Mets' finest talents, but she had the opportunity to have a conversation and connect with him as well. The game may be gone (and might not resume, during Kathleen's lifetime, as jarring as that may seem), but the players are going above and beyond to make sure her lifetime of fandom is rewarded. Wow.
