Pete Alonso Takes Down Vladimir Guerrero Jr in Finals to Win 2019 Home Run Derby
By Sean Facey
In the end, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s Herculean efforts in the second round against Joc Pederson weren't enough to bring him the Home Run Derby title.
Instead it was fellow rookie slugger Pete Alonso who was crowned champion as he took down Guerrero on a walk-off blast in the final round to win the 2019 Home Run Derby.
It was Alonso's third walk-off home run of the night, and it made him just the second rookie to ever win the Home Run Derby outright. The win earned Alonso, who's getting paid the league minimum this year, a cool $1 million.
The event was fraught with excitement this year the likes of which the league has never seen. Guerrero and Joc Pederson duked it out in the second round, combining for an absurd 79 total home runs, and Alonso took down to the last second in each of his first two rounds to eliminate his opponents.
Guerrero slugged 91 home runs to Alonso's 57, but the lack of extra swings ultimately played in the Mets rookie's favor. He clearly had more left in the tank in the final round than his Blue Jays counterpart.
It's the perfect mid-season cap to an already stellar campaign for Alonso. Hopefully these stars have the chance to compete again in the future, because this was a Derby the likes of which will be tough to replicate.
