Peter Gammons Throws Semi-Shade at Brian Cashman's Andrew Miller Deal With Ben Cherington Comparison

Do you remember former Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington? He didn't have a great tenure in Beantown as the lead decision maker, and he surely wasn't his predecessor Theo Epstein, but the man did make some shrewd moves at the margins, and constructed a 2013 World Champion.

So, why did well-respected baseball writer and commentator Peter Gammons throw shade at New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman by making a comparison that involves Cherington? Bizarrely, Gammons snidely called out Cash's 2016 deal that sent Andrew Miller to the Indians, claiming the Red Sox addition of Eduardo Rodriguez for a version of Miller with less control trumped it.

Gammons tweeted that back in 2014, Cherington traded reliever Andrew Miller to the Baltimore Orioles for left-handed starter Eduardo Rodriguez, who has done a nice job with Boston.

That's a win.

Underneath that he mentioned the Andrew Miller trade with the Cleveland Indians two years later that brought Clint Frazier and Justus Sheffield to New York, and how Sheffield has mainly stayed in Double-A with the Seattle Mariners.

Okay, what's the point? Does he think Cherington was better at his job than Cashman is?

I doubt that's what Gammons was saying, but the comparison itself is odd.

Additionally, there is this whole angle.

The story of the Yankees' deal is hardly written yet. Sheffield became Paxton, and Frazier is a young masher who certainly has a prominent role in New York's future, whether as trade bait or a contributor.

Gammons specifically mentioned both Cherington and Cashman, almost like he was comparing both guys. If anything, this tweet is knocking Cashman, whether that was the intent or not.
