Phillies Acquire Infielder Brad Miller From Yankees
By Joey Mauceri
The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired infielder Brad Miller from the New York Yankees in exchange for cash considerations. The acquisition gives the Phillies some much-needed depth as they angle to get back to winning ways and regain their lead in the NL East.
Miller was signed by the Yankees in April after being DFA'd by the Cleveland Indians. Miller played just 13 games for the Indians at the big league level, batting .250 with 1 home run. The seven-year veteran has yet to see MLB action since that brief stint with Cleveland, posting a .994 OPS in 41 games with the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate.
Miller was originally acquired by New York as a depth piece for a team that had a multitude of injuries. Miller's versatility makes him an excellent backup option, though he was never called up to the Show by the Yanks. His versatility should serve Philadelphia well, however; Miller has played every position on the diamond outside of pitcher and catcher throughout his career.
The Phils can expect the lefty swinger to bring some production to the plate as well, as he owns a 100 OPS+ for his career, essentially making him an average MLB hitter. His best year came in 2016, in which he posted a .786 OPS and slugged 30 homers for the Tampa Bay Rays.
Miller will be called up to the majors by Philadelphia this weekend in Atlanta, serving as a super utility player for a team that is desperate for some depth and production from their bench.
