Phillies' Bryce Harper Announces He's Donating Large Sum to Coronavirus Relief Efforts
By Brady Williams
Big problems require big solutions, and in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper is doing what he can to help in the form of a big donation.
In a tweet on Thursday afternoon, the six-time All-Star announced that he and his family will be contributing $500,000 to coronavirus relief efforts. The moeny will help support organizations in Las Vegas, where he was born and raised, and Philadelphia, where he has resided since joining the Phillies in 2019.
The donation will provide funds to Direct Relief, a non-profit that has been helping deliver protective equipment throughout the pandemic; Three Square, a group in Las Vegas that runs food banks and emergency food delivery programs; and Philabundance, another hunger relief group in Philadelphia.
The announcement comes on the day that would have been the Phillies' home opener. Even without baseball, it seems Harper wants to do what he can to encourage the people of his new city. He's joining players like Shin-Soo Choo, who have come through big time with philanthropic efforts.
The statement concluded with "#CrushCOVID" and a plea to everyone to stick to the guidelines put in place by medical professionals. Let's make it happen, folks.
