VIDEO: Phillies Slugger Bryce Harper Homered in His Return to Nationals Park One Year Ago Today
By Scott Rogust
Bryce Harper dominated headlines last year when the former Washington Nationals star opted to sign with the Philadelphia Phillies on a $330 million contract. Much to the dismay of Nats fans, he'll be in the NL East for years to come, and Harper reminded them of that in his return to Nationals Park last year. Exactly one year ago today, Harper crushed a two-run bomb to the second deck seating in right field to welcome himself back to his old stomping grounds.
Yup, there's going to be a lot of those between now and the end of Harper's contract in Philly.
Despite the Phillies' acquisitions of the Harper, JT Realmuto and Jean Segura, the team finished in fourth place in the NL East with an 81-81 record. As for the Nationals, they went from an abysmal start through the first two months of the season to World Series Champions by the time October rolled around.
The Phils are going to need a lot more out of their core, most notably Harper, if they want to compete with the likes of the Nats and Braves.
Nonetheless, with baseball on hold, this is a good memory for Phils fans to look back on as they wait for Harper to step into the box again.
