Phillies RHP David Robertson Blasts Astros Over Sign-Stealing Scandal
By Scott Rogust
With pitchers and catchers reporting for Spring Training, one topic is circulating throughout every facility: the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal.
Plenty of players have come out and voice their anger towards the Astros organization, particularly in recent days. The latest to do so is Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher and former New York Yankee David Robertson, and he didn't hold back.
“It’s a disgrace what they’ve done and they’re going to have to live with it and everyone knows,” Robertson said on Wednesday, via NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Robertson experienced first-hand what it was like to be on the wrong side of the sign-stealing antics. The reliever entered Game 6 of the 2017 ALCS for the Yankees with the team down 3-1, but saw the deficit increase to 7-1 after failing to record an out against Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Yuli Gurriel, and Alex Bregman.
Entering that game, Robertson had only surrendered one run in eight innings that postseason, and had a 1.03 ERA during his 30 regular-season appearances for the Yankees.
"I got roughed up in Game 6,” he said, via NBC Sports. “And I felt like in that game I threw as well as I’ve ever thrown in my entire life. I had some pitches that got hit that I was a little shocked by and some pitches that didn’t get swung at that I was a little shocked by. At the time, I wasn’t thinking about what we know now. But it all comes together now and, you know, I’m upset about it, that’s for sure."
Unfortunately, even though the Astros were proven guilty, Robertson can never get that year back.
