Phillies Top Prospect Dylan Cozens Out for Year After Undergoing Foot Surgery
By Ryan Flores
It looks like the Philadelphia Phillies won't be able to call on one of their slugging top prospects should an injury occur in the outfield.
Dylan Cozens, currently on the roster of the Triple-A Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, is now out for the year after undergoing foot surgery.
Cozens was not having a good start to his season at all, as he slashed .167/.333/.462 with six homers in 23 games. Cozens has never had an issue showcasing his power, as he has 132 career minor league home runs, with 54 of them coming with the Iron Pigs. He's never been one to simply make contact or sport a patient eye, however, as he has a career .252 average and .328 OBP in the minors. He will enter the 2020 season without any remaining minor-league options.
Prior to 2019, Cozens was the Phillies 15th-ranked prospect, as he was praised for his raw power/speed combination, but he has yet to become the complete picture we dreamed he would be, clearly surpassed by his counterpart, Rhys Hoskins. For now, the Phillies should be just fine in the outfield, with Odubel Herrera, Andrew McCutchen and Bryce Harper all locked into starting roles. If an injury were to occur, Nick Williams could potentially make his way back to the majors, or even third-ranked prospect Adam Haseley.
Here's to hoping that Cozens makes a full recovery and is able to get to the majors in 2020.
