Phillip Dorsett's Contract Details Surface With Seahawks and We Have No Idea How Seattle Pulled off Such a Heist
By Scott Rogust
The New England Patriots, who had minimal cap space entering the 2020 league year, were bound to lose significant players, such as wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, who signed a deal with the Seattle Seahawks. Patriots owner Robert Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick aren't going to be happy once they hear the details of the departed wideout's new contract.
Dorsett signed on with the Seahawks to a one-year deal, which qualifies for the veteran's minimum, worth slightly over $1 million. But general manager John Schneider wasn't done there, as he gave Dorsett a $137,500 signing bonus, which means he'll account for less than $1 million against the cap in 2020.
Highway. Robbery. You mean to tell us that the great football mind of Belichick couldn't find a way to pull off a deal like this to keep Dorsett on the roster? That's simply unfathomable.
Yes, Dorsett was a part of the Patriots' underperforming receiving corps last season, but he still finished as the team's third-most productive wideout on the team (29 receptions for 397 yards and five touchdowns). Not to mention that he's one of the faster receivers in the league, and is only 27 years old.
The Seahawks knew this, and not only managed to secure Dorsett as their new No. 3 wideout, but ensured that he counted very little against the cap so they can make additional moves in the offseason. That's some galaxy-brain intelligence from Schneider and Co.
The Seahawks are playing chess, while the other 31 teams in the NFL are playing checkers.
