Coonelly took over as team president after the 2007 season. Before that, he had served in the MLB commissioner's office as a lawyer who settled arbitration hearings and dealt with collective bargaining agreements in conjunction with the Major League Baseball Players Association.
With massive turnover within their branch of operations, the Pirates may be heading to an even darker period in team history. After letting go of longtime manager Clint Hurdle the day before the final game of the 2019 regular season, the Pirates have yet to hire a new manager, although that matter should be resolved soon enough.

Heading into an offseason of complete uncertainty, whoever the next team president is will have a heck of a rebuilding process to undergo along with general manager Neal Huntington, who himself can count on being on the hot seat next season.
