3 Players the Mets Need to Sign Once MLB Lifts Freeze

The New York Mets will need to be ever-careful to ensure that they remain in the playoff race for as long as possible in 2020. A 60-game season means that first-year manager Luis Rojas' side can't afford to endure any lengthy skids, and we all know they're good for at least one or two of those in a normal year.

New York's elite pitching staff and above-average lineup will put the club in a solid position to compete this campaign, but fans in Queens will be the first to admit that the franchise should pounce at the opportunity to make some additions once MLB lifts its transaction freeze on Friday. Here are three players that GM Brodie Van Wagenen should consider.

3. Tony Sipp

The Mets already have a slew of right-handers in their bullpen, so they could really use a southpaw with legitimate experience. Tony Sipp fits that profile. Though the 36-year-old was poor with Washington last year, he's only one season removed from an exceptional season with the Astros in 2018, when he posted a 1.86 ERA and a 9.8 K/9. New York could do a lot worse on the open market than Sipp, who is one of the few available left-handers still braving free agency.

2. Matt Harvey

Rumors have been swirling that indicate the Mets are keen on a reunion with Matt Harvey, and we honestly don't see the downside. For starters, the former All-Star will have lackluster expectations and wont be asked to take on a significant role. New York could deploy him out of the bullpen and as an emergency starting option if one of their big guns were to go down with an injury. Harvey isn't the stud he once was early on in his career, but he's motivated to turn his career around and is familiar with the way the Mets go about their business.

1. Yasiel Puig

Had a universal DH not been implemented, we wouldn't even consider the Mets as a potential landing spot for Yasiel Puig. Now, however, you have to figure that will be the everyday role for Yoenis Cespedes, which opens up a spot in the outfield. If projected starter Brandon Nimmo struggles to bounce back from the neck injury that limited him to 69 games in 2019 -- which is very possible considering that he's an unknown commodity -- Michael Conforto could move over to center field, where he has plenty of experience. That would leave Puig with the opportunity take the starting right field spot. Seriously, what Mets fan would say no to that prospect?
