3 Players Other Than Patrick Mahomes the Chiefs Need to Extend
By Jerry Trotta
The latest reports suggest the Kansas City Chiefs want to get a contract extension done with quarterback Patrick Mahomes as soon as this offseason. It's a no-brainer move from the franchise as the 24-year-old has already established himself as the most valuable asset in the NFL. In due time, Mahomes will become the league's richest player.
With that much certain, the Chiefs should probably start thinking about what other players they want to lock up for the future. After all, Mahomes is going to need some help.
3. Austin Reiter
Austin Reiter signed a two-year, $4.5 million prove-it contract with the Chiefs early on in the 2018 offseason. Ironically enough, the 28-year-old is fresh off his best season as a pro after starting all 16 games for the team while playing 99% of the offensive snaps. In doing so, Reiter should have secured his spot as Kansas City's center of the future. With the South Florida product's deal set to expire following the 2020 season, the franchise should absolutely look to keep him locked in to a starting role.
2. Damien Williams
We fully understand the unappealing optics behind signing a 28-year-old running back to a contract extension, but the positives far outweigh the negatives in this scenario. With his potential being fully realized in Arrowhead, Damien Williams shouldn't be paid like a top back, but an extension that gives him a raise would go a long way for both sides. Perhaps more important is the fact that he only has 432 touches under his belt for his career, so Williams' legs are remarkably fresh for a six-year veteran. Giving the Super Bowl star a short-term deal makes more sense than you think.
1. Chris Jones
Kansas City has until the July 15 deadline to reach an agreement with Chris Jones before he becomes set to play the 2020 season under the franchise tag. The 25-year-old stud is imperative to what the Chiefs do defensively. Across the last two campaigns (29 games) Jones has produced 76 tackles, 24.5 sacks, 39 QB hits, 3 forced fumbles, and 9 pass deflections. The 2016 second-round pick is one of the best defensive linemen in the sport, and KC should get started on making him one of the wealthiest.
