3 Players the Rams Can Sign After Jared Goff and Rob Havenstein Restructure Contracts to Free up Cap Space
By Jerry Trotta
It hasn't taken long for Jared Goff's monster four-year, $134 contract to blow up in the face of the Los Angeles Rams. In fact, they practically owned up to the mistake by restructuring his contract over the weekend.
The reshuffling of the deal has created $7 million in cap space, and the Rams immediately put their new money to use by signing linebacker Leonard Floyd and defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson. Then, Rob Havenstein restructured his deal with the team to free up another $1.56 million. Los Angeles doesn't have a ton of wiggle room left, but it still has enough to make some more additions.
Here are three players the Rams can sign with the leftover dough.
3. Tavon Wilson
With all due respect, John Johnson III and Taylor Rapp should inspire anything but confidence at the back end of the Rams secondary. Adding a veteran like Wilson wouldn't solve LA's problems, but he's far better than what the team currently has. In 2019, the 30-year-old compiled 98 combined tackles, five pass deflections, and two fumble recoveries. Wilson has a nose for the pigskin and the Rams need that in the worst way on defense.
2. Prince Amukamara
The Chicago Bears surprisingly released Amukamara after three solid seasons. Outside of Jalen Ramsey, Los Angeles is pretty inexperienced in the secondary. A player like Amukamara, who would come on the cheap at this stage in free agency, would give Ramsey some much-needed insurance. We're just not convinced that Troy Hill is ready to become the No. 2 CB on a team with playoff aspirations.
1. Markus Golden
Yes, Golden was a member of a pitiful New York Giants defense in 2019, but the 29-year-old was extremely productive in the second half of the season. He remains a free agent and he'd provide some needed depth on a Rams defense that's desperate for linebacker help. Los Angeles can do a lot worse than signing a player who logged 10 sacks a season ago to a cheap one-year deal.
