3 Players Who Won't Be on the White Sox Roster After 2020 Season
By Andrew Gullotta
As the White Sox continue to focus on rebuilding their roster, there are a few players who may be on their way out of the south side of Chicago after the 2020 season. The team's infusion of young talent coupled with their hopeful ability to spend more money in free agency next year could contribute to these three guys skipping town and finding new teams in 2021.
3. Steve Cishek
The journeyman side-armer signed a one-year, $6 million deal, with a club option in 2021 this offseason after his stint with the Cubs. With the crosstown rivals, Cishek owned a 2.55 ERA and struck out 135 batters in two seasons. If he manages to do that again, perhaps the Sox pick up his $6.75 million team option for 2021, but if he underperforms and doesn't help prop up the bullpen, they'll gladly pay the $750K buyout and watch him walk.
2. James McCann
McCann broke out in 2019 and hit .273, blasted 18 homer runs, and registered 60 RBI in his first All-Star campaign. Unfortunately for the slugger, he'll now back up Yasmani Grandal, who the Sox paid handsomely this offseason. After 2020, McCann will no doubt be looking for a starting job, so this will likely be his last year in Chicago.
1. Ross Detwiler
Yup, we know lefties are a commodity in the MLB, but not ones who have a career 4.60 ERA. Detwiler will be a free agent after 2020, and unless he find a way to improve upon his unsightly 6.59 ERA across 18 games with the White Sox last year, he's as good as gone. To put it nicely, he'll need something close to a career season to return to the team in 2021.
