This Patriots-Bears Trade for Mitchell Trubisky Could Work After Chicago Declined His 5th-Year Option
By Mark Powell
The Chicago Bears' Mitchell Trubisky experiment could be nearing a close, especially now that Ryan Pace and Co. opted to decline the quarterback's fifth-year contract option for 2021.
And with Nick Foles in tow at Soldier Field, the time to trade the UNC product is now.
Bill Belichick should be interested despite the Patriots' insistence that they're comfortable sticking with Jarrett Stidham as starting QB. Why role with an unproven, second-year signal-caller who could barely cut it at Auburn when Trubisky is available and still just 25 years old?
Trubisky has shown flashes in Chicago, albeit limited ones. Just two years ago, the tune around the Windy City was far different, as fans and pundits were more focused on how he could build off a Pro Bowl season and an NFC North title rather than why the Bears passed on both Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes to select him.
Ripping Trubisky from the Bears' clutches won't be too tough, especially with only one year left on his deal. A third-round pick ought to do the trick, as Chicago is suddenly heavily invested in Foles financially. All in all, it would return the fourth-round compensation they gave up for Foles and then some.
For Belichick, it provides another chance to prove himself without Tom Brady, but with a QB with proven potential rather than Stidham, who remains a mystery.
