Pro Bowl DE Muhammad Wilkerson Reportedly Arrested for DWI in New York
With NFL teams looking to fill roster spots and contracts being signed daily, free agents around the league would do well to be on their best behavior. And most of them seem to be.
Veteran defensive end Muhammad WIlkerson, however, was arrested early Saturday morning in New York City for driving while intoxicated, as first reported by the New York Daily News. He was pulled over shortly after running a stop sign when officers expected him of being under the influence. His blood alcohol level was recorded at .09, modestly above the legal limit.
For any rostered player, this is a PR problem and a legal headache. But Wilkerson, despite being a talented former Pro Bowler, is still unsigned. In fact, the former Jets first-round pick is widely considered to be the single best 2019 free agent that still doesn't have a team.
Today's developments don't help much.
Before this incident, Wilkerson was regarded as a low risk, high reward free agent that could be able to help a variety of teams this season. He had already visited teams such as his former Green Bay Packers to positive effect, and was scheduled to visit more teams soon.
This doesn't suddenly mean Wilkerson's playing ability ought to be questioned, but teams look for more than that in free agency. He surely cost himself money through his indiscretions this weekend.
