Here's What a Browns-Myles Garrett Long-Term Contract Should Look Like
By Michael Luciano
The Cleveland Browns made good use of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, as they picked Texas A&M pass rusher Myles Garrett. After 30.5 sacks in 35 games, it's time for the two parties to start talking extension, as GM Andrew Berry has stated he wants to get a new contract with Garrett locked up.
He'd be crazy not to.
Garrett has shown enough in his first three seasons to earn an eight-figure deal, and the floor for his next contract in terms of yearly value should be $21 million per season, which is what Dallas Cowboys pass rusher Demarcus Lawrence is making next season.
Only three pass rushers make north of a $20 million average annual value, as Lawrence makes $21 million, Kansas City Chiefs star Frank Clark makes $20 million, and Chicago Bears superstar Khalil Mack can cash in a cool $23.5 million this season. While Garrett has yet to reach Mack's rarified air, his quality on the field and potential over the next few years mean that the Browns need to think seriously about giving him a contract close to Mack's.
Truly elite pass rushers don't come down the block every day, and the Browns need to realize they have a truly dominating specimen in Garrett. If Berry gets his ducks in a row and can manage to begin real work on a deal, Browns fans can watch the 2020 season knowing their best defensive player is signed up for the long haul.
