This Cowboys-Chargers Blockbuster Trade Involving Joey Bosa Could Actually Work

The Dallas Cowboys remain on the fence about paying Dak Prescott the absolutely absurd money he's asking for. Should they give in to his demands, their championship window could close by the time the ink goes dry.

Should Jerry Jones go an alternate route, adding to Dallas' stacked defense makes a lot of sense, especially since they'd be restarting in a year's time with either a rookie signal-caller or a league-average option through free agency.

Joey Bosa is entering a contract year, and the Chargers' road to contention is long and arduous, especially if they plan on rebuilding around a rising QB prospect like Justin Herbert or Tua Tagovailoa. The Ohio State product may not factor into LA's long-term plans financially, and depositing him with the Cowboys in exchange for more draft capital makes more sense than you might think.

Adding a young, talented pass-rusher in Bosa would take some finagling from the Cowboys' perspective. First, to match up salaries, Dallas should ship away Tyrone Crawford, who is scheduled to make $8 million next year. That would theoretically allow Big D to take in Bosa's $14 million cap hit in 2020.

On top of Crawford, a first- and a third-round draft pick will be an absolute necessity to pry Bosa away from the City of Angels. If DeForest Buckner is worth a first-rounder on his own, Bosa's more valuable by name recognition and ability to rush the quarterback alone. That extra mid-rounder will be necessary to sweeten the deal.

The Cowboys wouldn't be able to sign Bosa long-term until next offseason due to cap constraints, and that's the main risk involved here. Allowing a prized acquisition to hit free agency isn't ideal -- but paying Dak Prescott upwards of $33 million per season on a long-term contract wouldn't be, either. It's time for Dallas to break a few eggs.

Even one season of Bosa with this core is extremely attractive. Hopefully, the Cowboys faithful will be able to grow accustomed to seeing the former Buckeyes with a star on his helmet for years to come.
