Former Lion Quandre Diggs Defends Matthew Stafford After NFL Writer Pairs Him With Group of Bad QB Contracts
By Michael Luciano
Matthew Stafford has been a frequent target of snarky fans and writers due to his massive contract that has yet to produce a playoff win for the Detroit Lions despite years of above-average production. One even went as far as lump him in as an equal amongst the likes of post-Super Bowl Joe Flacco, Jay Cutler and Matt Schaub.
Former Lion Quandre Diggs, now a member of the Seattle Seahawks, backed up his former quarterback, contending that Stafford was clearly better than Flacco, Cutler, and Schaub, and he was even willing to throw hands over that opinion.
Stafford might not be Patrick Mahomes, but he does have 41,000 yards and 256 touchdowns under his belt while playing most of his career with subpar weapons and offensive lines.
If you're going to take a shot at Stafford, this is the wrong year to do it. The Lions went 3-4-1 with him as the starter, with two of those losses coming in a nail-biter against the Chiefs and a game against the Packers that the refs stole from them. Stafford threw 19 touchdowns against five picks under new OC Darrell Bevell, setting new career-highs in yards per attempt and passer rating.
Stafford hasn't won a playoff game, yes, but any success at all with that cursed franchise, a parade of mediocre coaches, and one game-changing skill position player over the last decade plus in Detroit should be applauded. If you look at the numbers and watch the tape, Stafford gets disrespected more than a player of his caliber should.
