The Raiders Almost Signed LeSean McCoy and Fans Should Be Glad They Didn't Make Another Dumb Move

As head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Mike Mayock continue their complete redesign of the Las Vegas Raiders, it's safe to say that some changes have been better received than others. They've reached on draft picks and let veterans walk away, but one move that they almost made would've sent fans into an uproar.

NFL insider Mike Garafolo dropped news this week they were one of the teams that have pursued aging free agent LeSean McCoy before going a different route. And fans of the Silver and Black ought to be grateful for that.

The Raiders instead added Devontae Booker, which was undoubtedly the right move. Booker is a full four years younger than McCoy, and is far less likely to have delusions about what his ideal role on this team ought to be. As a cheaper option with far less mileage on him, he just makes more sense for this team than Shady despite lacking the broad name recognition.

Most importantly, the Raiders have their starting running back. Josh Jacobs was terrific last season, and there's no doubt that he's their bell cow in the seasons to come. Jalen Richard is good chage of pace that can contribute to the passing game as well, and he's certain to be the next man up if something happens to Jacobs.

After those two, they needed a rotation back to round things out. That role doesn't make sense for McCoy, period.

Adding an old, expensive backup isn't in the best interests of a team that needs to keep making ambitious roster adjustments. If they want to get out of a rut and be contenders, "Gryuyock" can't be signing big names that are washed up and wasting salary cap money.

All told, Raiders fans should be letting out a sigh of relief right now.
