Raiders Cut Veteran WR Ryan Grant and Add LB Justin Phillips to Active Roster
By Kevin Aquino
The Raiders' injury issues among their linebackers has left the squad extremely shallow at the position. As a result, Jon Gruden and Co. are dipping into the practice squad for some reinforcements.
Oakland is elevating LB Justin Phillips from their practice squad, and the team released veteran wideout Ryan Grant in a corresponding move in order to open up a spot on the active roster.
Phillips was originally signed by the Dallas Cowboys after going undrafted in 2019, but was brought onto the Raiders practice squad before Week 1 of the season. This will be Phillips' first opportunity on an active roster in the league, and he could see decent field time considering the surge of injuries plaguing the team.
As for Grant, his first shot came in 2014, when he was drafted by the Redskins in the fifth round. The 28-year-old would spend four seasons in Washington before a one-year stop in Indianapolis. His best season came in 2017 when he logged 45 receptions for 573 yards and four touchdowns.
The Raiders have rid themselves of Antonio Brown and gone 1-2 so far, dropping back-to-back games against the Chiefs and Vikings. We'll get to see Phillips' defensive impact when Oakland takes on the Colts this Sunday.
