Raiders GM Mike Mayock's Comments on Richie Incognito Signing Are Completely Tone-Deaf
By Charles Nason
In the wake of the Oakland Raiders controversial signing of Richie Incognito, general manager Mike Mayock fielded questions about the deal. Mayock, who was hired by the Raiders back in December of last year, came to the defense of Incognito along with the Raiders' decision to sign the veteran lineman.
Character became one of the central talking points between Mayock and the media. Mayock was asked about Incognito's long list of off-field issues and how he would fit into the Raiders organization.
Mayock went on to explain that he believed Incognito "has been fine" when he is solely focused on football. However, the three-time pro bowler has proven that staying focused on on-field business is easier said than done.
The general manager's primary justification for signing Incognito is that the move is a "prove it" deal. This means that Incognito must prove himself on and off the field, putting his controversial past behind him.
Mayock believes that Incognito is a valuable addition to the team's roster despite his laundry list of character issues. He also stated that the organization will try and help Incognito "help himself". The Raiders are still unsure whether or not the NFL will punish Incognito for last year's incidents.
Incognito has already received a second chance. This goes far beyond that, and if anything hurts the Raiders' image. At best, Incognito is a moderately good blocker, especially at this point in his career. Why the hell take on that much risk?
