Raiders and Jaguars Rumored to Be Close on Trade for Yannick Ngakoue
By Jerry Trotta
When you think of players that are likely to be traded at any point during the NFL Draft, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue has to be near the top of the list. After being franchise-tagged earlier in the offseason, the 25-year-old star has come forward on several occasions to assert that he's played his last down in Duval County.
Well, the latest buzz suggests that the Jaguars have taken a shine to the Las Vegas Raiders as a potential buyer, and that a deal between both teams could be competed soon.
The Raiders are reported to be offering their No. 19 overall pick, though Jacksonville is working hard to poach Las Vegas' No. 12 selection.
This rumor further proves that Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell is nothing if not stubborn. We get that he's looking to get acquire the highest pick possible, but the fact that he's even considering dissuading the Raiders over a seven-pick difference in the first round is nonsensical.
Not many players in the NFL are worth first-rounders. Ngakoue's production -- he's registered at least eight sacks in all four seasons -- suggests that he is, but he's also made it clear that he has zero interest in returning to Jacksonville. That gives Caldwell hardly any leverage here.
A first-rounder should be enough to get a deal done. Caldwell should consider himself lucky that Las Vegas is willing to fork over its No. 19 overall pick. For the sake of the sanity of the Jaguars' fan base, we hope that Caldwell's outlandish demands don't force the Raiders to walk.
