Raiders Place DJ Killings on IR and Claim DB Hamp Cheevers
By Charles Nason
After a win over the Rams in their preseason opener, the Oakland Raiders made a simple swap with a few of the league's emerging cornerbacks.
DJ Killings put on a solid performance in the Raiders' first preseason game, but that unfortunately landed him on the IR just a day later. With Killings dealing with an injury, Oakland went out and scooped former Boston College star CB Hamp Cheevers after he was waived by the Falcons just a few days ago.
Killings suffered a torn pectoral and is without a firm timetable for a return to action, though it certainly won't be anytime soon. He is set to undergo surgery in the coming days.
By the time the regular season rolls around, it's unclear whether Killings or Cheevers will be part of the Raiders' final roster. Either way, they've added some solid depth into the backfield.
It'll be particularly interesting to see how Cheevers fares, given that both he and GM Mike Mayock attended Boston College. While that likely won't give him an edge in making the 53-man roster, it certainly won't hurt.
