Raiders' Preseason Depth Chart Lists Hunter Renfrow as Starting Slot Receiver
By Kevin Aquino
The Raiders took a shot on Hunter Renfrow in the fifth round of the NFL Draft, and it's since been reported that he'd been turning heads in practice.
Well, as it currently stands, it looks like the former Clemson standout is going to be the Raiders' starting slot receiver. The team's depth chart has him listed atop the bunch at the slot receiver position, which means we could be seeing a lot of Renfrow in his rookie year.
At Clemson, Renfrow won the 2018 Burlsworth Trophy, which is given to the best player who started their collegiate career as a walk-on. The Raiders seem to have high hopes and expectations for the 23-year-old, who's coming off a National Championship with the Tigers.
Renfrow accumulated over 2,000 yards, 186 receptions and 15 touchdowns through four years at Clemson. At 5-foot-10 and 184 lbs, Renfrow may not exactly look the part, but it looks like he's been able to operate well enough to be a get some targets on an NFL team.
Behind the rookie on the depth chart is Ryan Grant and De'Mornay Pierson-El. Grant is a five-year veteran that could easily slide into the starting spot if Renfrow hits the rookie wall. Pierson-El, on the other hand, has made stops in the CFL and AAF before finding his way to Oakland this year.
The Raiders finished last season with a 4-12 record and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Renfrow may not be a huge difference-maker right away, but the Raiders are giving him plenty of opportunity to start the season.
