Raiders Signing Prince Amukamara a Necessary Move After Eli Apple Deal Fell Through
By Scott Rogust
The Las Vegas Raiders struck out when trying to land a former New York Giants starting cornerback at the start of the new league year, but pivoted to another and succeeded.
According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Raiders are signing former Chicago Bears cornerback Prince Amukamara to a one-year contract.
As mentioned earlier, the Raiders initially planned on signing Eli Apple to a one-year, $6 million contract. Yet, the former first-round bust of the Giants failed a physical with Las Vegas, and the offer was officially shredded.
While it's unfortunate to have an offer fall apart, the Raiders actually got a better cornerback in Amukamara.
Just like Apple, Amukamara didn't live up to his first-round selection back in 2011, but he was an above-average corner during his time in New York. However, Amukamara really shined once he signed on with the Chicago Bears back in 2017.
In his three seasons with the Bears, Amukamara logged 167 tackles, 29 passes defensed, three interceptions, and three forced fumbles. More importantly, Amukamara ranked as the 33rd-best coverage cornerback in the entire league (70.5 score) per Pro Football Focus.
Now, the Raiders have filled the void at the No. 2 cornerback spot on their depth chart. Trayvon Mullen will continue to be listed at the top of the depth chart, while 19th overall pick Damon Arnette can serve in a rotational role as he transitions to the pro level.
It's a true win-win situation for the Raiders and Amukamara.
